Plan Your Essay
How you structure your essay is important. In IELTS Writing Task 2, you must write an essay responding to a question or statement. You need to present a clear and relevant argument, organize your ideas logically, and use a variety of grammar and vocabulary.
Introduction: Paraphrase the question and state your position if asked.
Body paragraphs: 2–3 to present an idea with supporting arguments.
Conclusion: Summarize your main points and restate your opinion or final thought.
Make sure you present your main ideas clearly and support them with examples or explanations. Other tips include:
Use linking words (e.g., "however," "therefore," "for instance" to connect ideas together).
Use a formal style and avoid contractions (e.g., write "do not" instead of "don't").
Use a wide range of vocabulary and grammar structures.
Stay on topic and avoid irrelevant details.
Use the PEEL Method
How you write your IELTS sample essay depends on the essay question type. Typical essay question types can be:
Opinion (agree or disagree)
Cause and effect
Problem and solution
Discussion (consider both views and give your opinion)
The PEEL method is a structured way to present and develop arguments in paragraphs. Each letter stands for a specific part of the paragraph that ensures that it's well-organized.

Point: start with a clear topic sentence to support your essay argument.
Example: use an example that helps to develop the argument.
Explain: explain how your example supports your point, giving further information to ensure the reader understands its relevance.
Link: to finish link the examples back to your essay question.
Example: How does climate change affect biodiversity?
Climate change has significantly impacted biodiversity, leading to habitat loss and species extinction.
According to a 2020 study by the World Wildlife Fund, nearly 1 million species are at risk of extinction due to climate-related changes.
Rising global temperatures are disrupting ecosystems, making it harder for species to adapt and survive. For instance, polar bears are losing their ice habitats due to melting glaciers.
This means that addressing climate change is critical to preserving biodiversity and maintaining ecological balance.
Quiz
Which part of the PEEL method does this sentence relate to? "A study showed that groups working together were able to complete tasks 50% more quickly."
Opinion Question (Agree or Disagree)
You need to give reasons to support why you agree or disagree. You must also state whether you agree or disagree. Make sure that you take a clear position. Write phrases such as "In my opinion..." or "I think..." so you leave the examiner in no doubt.

IELTS Sample Essay Question:
Some people believe that social media platforms have had a negative impact on both individuals and society. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
IELTS Sample Essay Introduction:
Social media has revolutionized the way people interact and access information. However, its impact on individuals and society remains a topic of debate. While social media offers undeniable benefits, such as connectivity and knowledge sharing, I strongly believe that its negative effects, including mental health issues and the spread of misinformation, outweigh its advantages.
Cause and Effect Question
For this type of question, you should separate the first body paragraph to focus on the causes, with the second on the effects.

Sample IELTS Essay Question:
Many people today suffer from stress-related illnesses. What are the main causes of stress, and what effects does it have on individuals and society?
Sample IELTS Essay Body Paragraph (Cause):
One major cause of stress is the high level of pressure in the workplace. Many employees face tight deadlines, long working hours, and a competitive environment, which can lead to chronic stress. For example, a survey conducted by the American Psychological Association found that work-related stress is the most common source of anxiety among adults. Furthermore, technological advancements have blurred the boundaries between personal and professional life, as people are often expected to respond to work-related messages even during their free time, leaving them with little opportunity to relax.
Quiz
Should you give your own personal opinion for this question? "Many people today suffer from stress-related illnesses. What are the main causes of stress, and what effects does it have on individuals and society?"
Problem and Solution Question
Again, here you need to separate your body paragraphs. Use body paragraph one to talk about problems and two about solutions.

Sample IELTS Essay Question:
In many urban areas, traffic congestion has become a serious issue. What are the main problems caused by traffic congestion, and what solutions can be implemented to tackle this issue?
Sample IELTS Essay Body Paragraph (Solution):
One effective approach would be to improve public transportation systems. Governments can invest in modern, efficient, and affordable buses and trains, which would encourage people to use these services instead of private vehicles. For example, cities like Tokyo and Singapore have demonstrated how robust public transport systems can significantly reduce traffic congestion. This would not only reduce traffic but also generate revenue that can be reinvested in transportation infrastructure.
Discussion Question
Here, you need to talk about both views and give your opinion, so you should create a third paragraph dedicated to giving your opinion.

Sample IELTS Essay Question:
Some people believe that online learning is more effective than traditional classroom learning, while others argue that it is less effective. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Sample IELTS Essay 3rd Paragraph (Opinion):
While both modes of education have their merits, I believe that a blended approach, combining online and traditional learning, is the most effective solution as students can benefit from a comprehensive and well-rounded education. Online learning excels in providing flexibility and access to a vast array of resources, while traditional classrooms offer a sense of community and direct interaction that enhances understanding.
