What’s CELPIP?

The Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) is an English language test designed to evaluate overall language proficiency. It measures how effectively individuals can use English in real-life situations.

The CELPIP tests are officially accepted for applications such as Canadian permanent residency (PR), the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), and admission to certain colleges and organizations in Canada and Australia.

Could CELPIP Be Your Cup of Tea?

Here are some of the main characteristics of the CELPIP exam:

  • Computer-based test format

CELPIP may be a great choice for you if you:

  • Want to receive your test results quickly

  • Prefer computer-based tests and feel uncomfortable speaking face-to-face with an examiner

  • Are not very confident in your spelling skills

  • Feel more comfortable with everyday communication rather than academic English

Of course, if you prefer talking to a real person instead of a computer, tests like IELTS might be more your style.

Overview of the Test Components

CELPIP offers different test types for different purposes. The CELPIP-General test is commonly used for Canadian permanent residency and immigration purposes.

CELPIP-General can be divided into four parts:

  • Listening

  • Reading

  • Writing

  • Speaking

The Listening, Reading, and Speaking sections come with practice questions, which is a great way to warm up your brain before the real battle begins!

A CELPIP-General test takes about 3 hours in total, so make sure to plan your time accordingly.

CELPIP Scoring System

CELPIP scores directly match CLB levels (Canadian Language Benchmarks).

So, if you receive a score of 7 on the CELPIP test, your equivalent CLB level is also 7.

Most PGWP applicants must meet a minimum language requirement:

  • University graduates: CLB 7

  • College or diploma graduates: CLB 5

Test-Day Experience

You need to arrive 45 minutes before the test begins. Check-in closes 15 minutes before the test starts.

Hot Tips

During the test, you may raise your hand to ask staff for a restroom break, but the timer on your screen will not pause. Many test takers choose to take a break during the Writing section, since it is generally considered easier and some people finish it quickly.

You may use a lot of scratch paper during the Listening section, and two sheets may not be enough. Don’t hesitate to ask staff for more. All scratch paper must be returned after the test and cannot be taken home.
